Vines growing on wire, or trellising, is common practice all over France.
There are numerous advantages to trellising:
- It helps the leaves be exposed to the sun. Photosynthesis is more active which promotes a higher concentration of sugar,
- For the “lazy” grape varieties like Syrah (whose shoots flop down, contrary to the Grenache which grows straight up), contributes to aeration and exposes the grape bunches to the sun,
- It facilitates the manual work of wine-growers (trimming, thinning, harvesting) … and of course the mechanical work, whether it be for ploughing or treatments.
